(Francesco Giannaccari international operations)
(Tom Lennox vice president of corporate communications)

AUGUST 21, 2006 -- Abercrombie & Fitch Co., New Albany, Ohio, is searching for a flagship site in the Ginza or Omotesando sections of Tokyo, according to Women's Wear Daily. The youth specialty retailer is just beginning to test the international waters with a flagship in London slated to open in Spring 2007, while no other overseas sites have been announced. "It is a very cautious approach. The pace is very deliberate," said Francesco Giannaccari, president of international operations at the company. "It's quite a significant effort to open a store first in London and then in Japan." Abercrombie plans to establish a legal entity in Japan and start a chain, rather than franchising or forming partnerships or joint ventures. "It would be very easy to go out and partner or license the brand to someone in Japan," said Tom Lennox, vice president of corporate communications for the company. "That's not something we would ever entertain, the reason being that the in-store experience in London and Tokyo needs to be exactly as it is in the U.S. to make sure every detail is exactly right." The Tokyo flagship, which the company hopes to open in Fall 2008, is based on the Fifth Avenue prototype and will be a multilevel unit of more than 20,000 sq. ft. (http://ddimagazine.com/)
